A good blow-dry should not collapse overnight. If yours does, one of these is usually the reason.

1. Do not over-condition the roots

Conditioner belongs on the mid-lengths and ends. On the scalp it weighs the root down, and a flat root is a blow-dry that has nothing to hold.

2. Get it properly dry

Ninety per cent dry is not dry. Any moisture left in the root will drop the shape within hours. Take it all the way, then let it cool completely before you touch it.

3. Let it cool in shape

Hair sets as it cools, not as it heats. That is the whole trick. Leave a section wrapped or pinned while it cools and it will hold for days longer.

4. Stop touching it

Every time you run your fingers through it you transfer oil from your hands to your hair. Day one is when the damage is done.

5. Use dry shampoo before you need it

A light mist at the root on the evening of day one absorbs oil before it appears. Waiting until it looks greasy is too late.

6. Protect it overnight

Loosely pin it up, or use a silk or satin pillowcase. Cotton drags at the cuticle and undoes the smoothing you paid for.

And the cut underneath

None of this rescues a shape that does not suit your hair. If your blow-dry only ever looks right when we do it, the cut is probably fighting your growth pattern. Say so at your next appointment and we will look at it.
